John Ogdon ∙ Concert Tours 1965-1970 ∙ 2CD

13.99

John Ogdon rose to international acclaim in 1962, when he was awarded first prize in the prestigious Moscow Tchaikovsky competition. His performances of the popular concertos by Schumann and Beethoven won him a vast public following. From his studies with Egon Petri, Ogdon absorbed an enthusiasm not only for Liszt but also for Busoni, frequently performing their works. During a recording session with Barbirolli, Ogdon’s remarkable memory came to the fore when they unexpectedly found themselves with spare time. Seizing the opportunity, they flawlessly recorded Franck’s Symphonic Variations, even though Ogdon had not played the piece in years. While his performances occasionally exhibited unpredictability, his finest moments showcased a poetic beauty of touch that was unmistakable, and he possessed the ability to infuse a performance with spontaneous bursts of electrifying inspiration. His mastery encompassed an expansive repertoire, presented in this CD release, featuring six concertos from various composers.
