Lev Oborin ∙ Concerts in Germany & France 1951-1966 ∙ 2CD

Lev Oborin won the first International Chopin Piano Competition in 1927. Upon his return to the Soviet Union, Oborin was accorded a hero’s welcome in the press and signed a contract to perform twelve concerts in Poland. In February 1947, he made his debut performance in post-war East Germany, captivating the public’s attention and leading to subsequent engagements. His successful concert career spanned over four decades, encompassing performances across Europe, Japan, and the United States. Over the course of his illustrious journey, he delivered a staggering three thousand, five hundred concert appearances, showcasing approximately eight hundred compositions from the piano repertoire on stages throughout the Soviet Union and seventeen other countries. Unfortunately, a second severe stroke struck him in the late 1960s, forcing him to withdraw from the concert platform. Despite this setback, he continued to impart his knowledge through teaching until his demise in 1974 at the age of 66 in Moscow. Our double album features previously unreleased recitals in Paris (1962) and East Berlin (1966), along with a live performance of Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under the baton of Franz Konwitschny in 1951.
