The German pianist Conrad Hansen (1906-2002) studied with Edwin Fischer and was later his teaching assistant. Today he has inexplicably fallen off the radar. That may appear strange, because he collaborated with such luminaries as Eugen Jochum, Willem Mengelberg, Herbert von Karajan, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Richard Strauss. I approached this Meloclassic release with great expectations. Here we have a pianist, from the stable of Edwin Fischer, playing music in the great Germanic tradition. The omens look good. Lynn Ludwig’s expert restorations sound very good to my ears. The detailed biographical essay supplies all the necessary background. This is Beethoven playing of the highest order, and it is to be hoped that more of the pianist’s sonata performances will surface in the not-too-distant future.

Elève d’Edwin Fischer à Berlin, Conrad Hansen (1906-2002) fut un beethovénien réputé, soliste d’un fameux Concerto no 4 avec Furtwängler. Quatre Sonates captées entre 1952 et 1963 témoignent d’un puissant engagement (« Waldstein »), d’une diction tour à tour vigoureuse, franche, non dénuée, dans les Opus 110 et 111, de subtilité.

Piano clair, toucher volatil, grand son, Conrad Hansen était destiné à Beethoven, comme le montre une vertigineuse « Waldstein ». Il déleste les deux dernières sonates de tout pathos, lecture moderne, drastique, alors qu’il venait de mettre tant de giocoso au Presto alla tedesca de la Sonate n 25.
