Tibor Varga‘s illustrious career spanned several decades, establishing him as one of the twentieth century’s preeminent violinists, and pedagogues. This historic compilation presents meticulously restored German radio broadcasts that illuminate a pivotal period in Varga’s artistic development following his emigration from Hungary. Of particular significance are two masterful collaborations with fellow Hungarian conductors: a compelling account of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto (1954) with Carl Garaguly, and a historically important interpretation of Berg’s Violin Concerto (1957) under Georg Solti. Varga’s connection to the Berg concerto holds special historical significance, as he achieved the distinction of presenting its Viennese premiere in 1946, with Hermann Scherchen conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
