Alexander Uninsky ∙ Concert Tours in Europe 1951-1962 ∙ 2CD

13.99

Alexander Uninsky, originally from Kiev in the Russian Empire, received his education at both the Kiev Conservatory and the Paris Conservatory. With his remarkable talent, he emerged victorious in the 2nd International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1932, launching him to great fame. His reputation quickly spread across all major cities of Europe, and he swiftly became one of the most highly sought-after pianists on the continent. Uninterrupted by his busy concert schedule, he captivated audiences throughout Europe, South America, and the Far East until the outbreak of the Second World War. Uninsky played a pioneering role in introducing Prokofiev’s Third Concerto to European audiences, and this concerto became an integral part of his illustrious career. After immigrating to the United States, Uninsky gained acclaim as an interpreter of the Romantic repertoire. This double album presents previously unreleased radio recordings by Uninsky, including rare renditions of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Bach’s Partita No. 2, and Schumann’s Carnaval.

Meloclassic would like to thank Philip B. Uninsky, son of Alexander Uninsky, for his valuable contributions to this release, including the provision of rare photographs featured in this collection.

An excellent portrait of this Ukrainian pianist with a passionate and extrovert temperament. Uninsky’s star has faded somewhat and though you can still find his recordings there are several works here that he did not record commercially. The sound quality is wonderful allowing Uninsky’s decidedly full sound and clarity of articulation to shine through. As I often find with Meloclassic releases the notes are excellent, full of biographical information.
