Daniil Shafran ∙ Concert Tours In Europe ∙ 2CD

Daniil Shafran enjoys a special cult status. When he made his American debut at Carnegie Hall in 1960, the Musical Courier noted, “Shafran demonstrated an astonishing technique wedded to a robust tone with just the right amount of expressiveness. His intonation is faultless, even in complicated double or triple stops and harmonics. He appears to achieve his phenomenally developed bowing through an unusual sort of wrist flexibility, almost as if his fingers were not holding the bow.” Shafran was somehow enslaved to his instrument, dedicating many hours each day to practice. His pursuit of perfection led him to focus intensely on refining even the smallest details. Additionally, he spared no mercy for his accompanists, insisting on prolonged and arduous rehearsal sessions. We have previously presented Shafran’s exceptional artistry and interpretive skills through two releases. In various European radio archives, we have discovered additional radio recordings, most of which were captured during live performances. These recordings are being released here for the first time.
