The refined pianistic artistry and interpretative prowess of Stefan Askenase have been previously acknowledged by us through various publications. After completing his education in Vienna under Emil von Sauer, Askenase established himself as a leading artist across Europe. The disrupted economic and musical landscape in Austria following the First World War, coupled with health issues, prompted Askenase to accept a teaching position at the Conservatory in Cairo in 1922, a decision that would ultimately prove advantageous due to the favorable climate of the city. Alongside his teaching duties, he embarked on extensive artistic journeys throughout Egypt, the Congo, Morocco, and Palestine. He then resided in Brussels for an extended period. However, beginning in 1942, the German occupation of Belgium intensified, leading to the systematic persecution and deportation of Jews to concentration camps. In order to escape these dire circumstances, he obtained forged documents portraying him as a non-Jewish Belgian citizen and fled to France. Following the liberation, Askenase returned to Brussels in 1945, resuming his concert career with remarkable success. In the subsequent seasons, he emerged as a prolific participant, performing in more than 120 concerts throughout Europe each year. Our new double album presents previously unreleased live performances, including a complete recital recorded in Amsterdam in 1969 and a concert captured in Hannover in 1972.
