Mikhail Waiman studied violin at the Odessa school of Pyotr Stolyarsky. Many of Russia’s most famous violinists, including David Oistrakh, Boris Goldstein, Elizaveta Gilels, Mikhail Fichtengolz, and others, began their studies with Stolyarsky before continuing at the Leningrad or Moscow conservatories. He then studied with Abram Yampolsky, who taught at the Moscow Conservatory, and with Yuri Eidlin at the Leningrad Conservatory. Since 1950, he regularly performed in East Germany where he soon became a great favorite and gave concerts each season in the principal cities (Dresden, Leipzig, Magdeburg, and Berlin), playing under high-profile conductors such as Rudolf Kempe, Hermann Abendroth, Franz Konwitschny, and Kurt Masur. A long-standing duo partnership connected him with the pianist Maria Karandashova, who was also a professor at the Leningrad Conservatory. This double album features Waiman’s live and radio studio recordings for Radio GDR (Rundfunk der DDR).

Ukrainian violin magic. A 1957 radio studio recording of Tchaikovsky’s Concerto with the Berlin RSO under Rolf Kleinert certainly reports a sensitive temperament and sweet, tremulous tone as well as a markedly individual approach to phrasing. The same ‘twofer’ also contains a lyrical yet lively Mozart Turkish Concerto as well as a markedly Khachaturian-like Violin Concerto (1949) by the Russian composer Aleksi Machavariani (under Franz Konwitschny, 1951), which Waiman plays with brilliance and panache. There’s also some exceptional Bach, the E major Concerto, where Karl Eliasberg can be heard groaning away at the head of Leipzig’s Radio Symphony. A marvellous set.

Waiman was a formidable performer in the best Soviet traditions. Though taken from different concert venues the sound quality and restoration of the tapes remains consistently good and the documentation is first-class.
