Halina Czerny-Stefańska started learning the piano at the age of five, under her father’s guidance. Her teachers later were Alfred Cortot and his assistant, Gabrielle Giraud-Latarse. Then Józef Turczyński, a widely-known Polish Chopin specialist, and, from 1946, Zbigniew Drzewiecki. Czerny-Stefanska achieved fame in 1949 when she was joint winner of the first post-war International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, sharing first prize with Bella Davidovich. She was then engaged to play in many of Europe’s musical centers but also in the United States, Australia, China, Korea, Japan, Israel, and South America. Czerny-Stefańska gained great popularity in the German Democratic Republic, where she often gave concerts and appeared as frequent guest on GDR radio “Rundfunk der DDR”. Her long-lasting career ended with two appearances in public, on 8 March 2001 in Warsaw, and the following day in Pruszków. A few months later, she died in her native town at the age of 78.

Chopin’s First Concerto with Czerny-Stefańska include a 1971 version with the Berlin RSO under Rolf Kleinert, recently released by Meloclassic. Here as before, poise and elastic phrasing are prominent virtues. The same desirable double-pack also includes dramatic accounts of Liszt’s E flat Concerto from 1964 (Heinz Fricke), Grieg’s A minor from 1962 (Otakar Trhlik) and Mendelssohn’s G minor from 1963 (Hans Schmidt-lsserstedt). The deal is completed, with stylishly performed solo pieces by Chopin, Rameau, Scarlatti and Roman Maciejewski.
