Arthur Grumiaux ∙ Live Concert Performances ∙ 2CD

13.99

The significant commencement of Arthur Grumiaux‘s career unfolded in 1940 when he achieved a unanimous victory in the Vieuxtemps first prize competition in Belgium. However, as World War II ensued and Belgium fell under occupation, his career was interrupted, leading him to assume the role of second violinist in the Artis Quartet. After the liberation, he made his debut in England and subsequently embarked on extensive tours throughout Europe, earning acclaim for the sensitivity and refinement evident in his playing, coupled with profound musicianship. On 7 November 1954, Franco Gallini conducted the first performance of Paganini’s Concerto No 4 in D minor since the composer’s era, featuring Grumiaux as the soloist. Subsequently, they presented the concerto in other European cities. A live recording from this period in Vienna has survived and is presented for the first time. The other works on this double CD are also live recordings, including the Bach Double Concerto featuring Henry Merckel as second violinist. In later years, Grumiaux grappled with increasing health challenges, particularly concerning his vision. The loss of vision in his left eye and significant fatigue in his right eye underscored the imperative need for assertive measures in managing his diabetes. Nonetheless, in 1983, despite experiencing partial blindness, he actively participated in the Stavelot festival until one year before his death in 1986.
