Building upon Meloclassic’s earlier releases dedicated to Stefan Askenase, this anthology presents newly uncovered radio recordings by the distinguished Polish pianist. Renowned for his poetic insight, clarity, and impeccable technique, Askenase’s artistry shines through in a complete recital captured in Lugano in 1964. The program features piano works by two of his favored composers, Mozart and Chopin, alongside rarer repertoire, including pieces by Beethoven, Prokofiev, Liszt, and Mendelssohn. Additionally, the collection features two concerto performances, preserved from the German Democratic Republic and Switzerland: a rendering of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27, documented in Leipzig, and an interpretation of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, recorded in proximity to Basel at Riehen.

Though quite different in style to many of the more extrovert pianists that I customarily listen to I have come to appreciate the elegant playing of Polish pianist Stefan Askenase through two previous releases of his live recordings issued by Meloclassic (MC1065 and MC1077. I would say that Meloclassic have gathered together some of the best of Askenase on these two discs; their releases have won me over to this lovely player and long-time admirers should hurry to snap up these treasures.
